Before It Ends with Us , it started with Atlas. Colleen Hoover tells fan favorite Atlas’s side of the story and shares what comes next in this long-anticipated sequel to the “glorious and touching” ( USA TODAY ) #1 New York Times bestseller It Ends with Us . Lily and her ex-husband, Ryle, have just settled into a civil coparenting rhythm when she suddenly bumps into her first love, Atlas, again. After nearly two years separated, she is elated that for once, time is on their side, and she immediately says yes when Atlas asks her on a date. But her excitement is quickly hampered by the knowledge that, though they are no longer married, Ryle is still very much a part of her life—and Atlas Corrigan is the one man he will hate being in his ex-wife and daughter’s life. Switching between the perspectives of Lily and Atlas, It Starts with Us picks up right where the epilogue for the “gripping, pulse-pounding” (Sarah Pekkanen, author of Perfect Neighbors ) bestselling phenomenon It Ends with Us left off. Revealing more about Atlas’s past and following Lily as she embraces a second chance at true love while navigating a jealous ex-husband, it proves that “no one delivers an emotional read like Colleen Hoover” (Anna Todd, New York Times bestselling author).

  1. Lily

I hadn’t decided, for sure, I wanted to read the sequel to IT ENDS WITH US. But when the audio recording became available at the library, I decided to give it a chance., At the end of IT ENDS WITH US, I was relieved that Lily chose to walk away from her abusive husband, after giving birth to their daughter, Emerson. Not all intimate partner violence survivors get out. And not all survivors survive the abuse., In IT STARTS WITH US, though Ryle is no longer Lily’s husband, his manipulating, threatening and angry outbursts are all but gone., Lily runs into Atlas, a love interest that arose from unusual circumstances in their teenage years, after not seeing or speaking to him for almost two years., Lily and Atlas figure out that the love they shared as teenagers is just as strong as before, if not more so., Lily and Atlas try to navigate whether and how they can see each other, Ryle – a very possessive and entitled ex-husband and father – making trouble, along with other life complications., What really sold the story for me was and is, Hoover does a really good job showing different things an abuser does, from gaslighting to blaming., This isn’t just another love story or romance. It’s a novel about how two survivors of domestic abuse, dealing with damage done to them, try to come together to create and have a loving, healthier relationship., I liked the novel so much I had to get a hard copy. I prefer reading a book (to listening), anyways., The novel is told from two POVs: Atlas and Lily., I love both characters, not just because they’re survivors of domestic violence. I appreciate the situations they navigate, in spite of their deep wounds, and how far they’re willing to go, not only for themselves or each other, but also for the greater community., Read it!

Brought to you by OBS reviewer Heidi, Lily and Ryle are divorced now, trying to make co-parenting work, without putting their daughter, Emerson, at risk of Ryle’s temper. Ryle has been pretty agreeable to Lily’s demands so far, but he is hopeful the two of them will eventually get back together., After running into her childhood love, Atlas, Lily finds herself conflicted. She wants to try a relationship with him, but worries how Ryle will react. Things are going good right now and she doesn’t want to rock the boat. However, she yearns to be with Atlas, the one man she never has to fear hurting her., Atlas and Lily decide to take things slow, but quickly fall into a rhythm, despite the hurdles life throws at them. Atlas’s restaurants keep getting vandalized at night and Ryle isn’t taking the news of Atlas being back in Lily’s life very well. Not to mention, Atlas finds out he has a brother and is determined to save him from the childhood he had!, I didn’t realize Hoover was writing a sequel to It Ends with Us. I loved that book, as heartbreaking as it was, so I had no choice, but to buy it and dive right in! I enjoyed this new installment, although I don’t think it was quite as good as the original. This story was sweeter than its heart-wrenching predecessor., Atlas is kind and dependable, as always. He will do whatever it takes to protect the ones he loves. And, Lily needs his quiet strength and a chance at a love that doesn’t hurt., This is a decent story that even gave a few chuckles, but it wasn’t the emotional read I always expect from this author. I’m a little sad about that, if I’m being honest. Overall, this was a sweet read that I didn’t want to put down.

I loved this book. Sometimes you just need one long beautiful epilogue to an intense book that deals with issues like spousal abuse and childhood trauma., Atlas is the perfect man. He just understands what to do in the different situations supporting whatever Lily is going thought with Ryle. They just knew they belonged together and that too was beautiful., The drive by hugs. The way he dealt with Josh, his mom and his relationship with “his therapist” Theo., “I’m exactly where I belong, being loved by Atlas Corrigan”, So I’ve read how people were disappointed with this book but for me I needed that happily ever after. Still hoping to find mine ❤️, “How in the world she can make me feel so whole when I had no idea I was only half of myself without her”, It’s a beautiful story and Colleen just a gift of marking a conversation between two people, trying to figure it out, a conversation you want to sit in on. Be a fly on the wall for., Having experienced and lived through the same type of relationship, I related to “It Ends with us” so have nothing but praise for this series 🫶🏼, “Maybe we’re so hungry for each other because we know it’s rare that we’ll get days like this. Or maybe it’s because we’ve missed each other for so many years”

If you made it through the emotional trauma of It Ends with Us, this will give you the happily ever after we all wanted for Lily. I felt like this book fell somewhere between a novella and a novel. The plot wasn’t quite as deep and dynamic as I expect from a CoHo book, but then again, Lily and Atlas’s story was meant to be happy and simple., “I hate that we have to pretend like we don’t already know we’re spending the rest of our lives together.”, This quote perfectly depicts the plot throughout the book. Lily and Atlas finally get a second chance, and from the beginning, everyone knows they’re end-game. Am I complaining? Absolutely not. This is the happy ending I wanted for the two of them., Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (of 5)
