NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Alternatingly heart-pounding and heartbreaking. This collaboration between two best-selling authors seamlessly weaves together Olivia and Lily’s journeys, creating a provocative exploration of the strength that love and acceptance require.”— The Washington Post GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK • PEOPLE ’S BOOK OF THE WEEK ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: PopSugar Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start. And for just a short while, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need. Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school, and Lily can’t help but fall for him, too. With Ash, she feels happy for the first time. Yet at times, she wonders if she can trust him completely. . . . Then one day, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead, and Asher is being questioned by the police. Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent. But she would be lying if she didn’t acknowledge the flashes of his father’s temper in Ash, and as the case against him unfolds, she realizes he’s hidden more than he’s shared with her. Mad Honey is a riveting novel of suspense, an unforgettable love story, and a moving and powerful exploration of the secrets we keep and the risks we take in order to become ourselves.

I really enjoyed the book and became completely engrossed. I thought the character of Lily was very well-developed, as was that of Asher. I liked the technique of telling her story from the end to the beginning, as even though she is murdered early on, she is brought vividly to life, along with flashbacks to when she was younger. Her story is very moving. I also found the parallels between the two young lovers very interesting, and not over-stated. I was a little frustrated with Asher’s attorney, who would have liked the authors to grapple a bit more with the ethical issues raised by his approach to Asher’s case. It wasn’t very client-centered. The best defense attorneys that I have known have been much more client-centered, so it was hard to understand why he was at the top of his field. The relationship between Olivia and Mike also seemed a bit contrived, and her abusive marriage and its impact on her was a critical part of the story, but not overly convincing. The bad fathers seemed a bit two-dimensional to me. All in all, a compelling, engrossing story, but it could have been even better if the adults were as well developed as Asher and Lily.

I try to read as many Jodi Picoult (and with her on this book Jennifer Finney Boylan) books as I can get my hands on, and I’m glad I got my hands on this one! What I love about Picout’s books is that she presents her readers with a new issue in every book, a different main issue that we didn’t know how little we knew about it., Here, it is about trans people – transsexual and transgender people and the ways other people accept – or not – transsexuals into their world., Asher is a great kid, a great teenager and companion to his divorced mother Olivia, a beekeeper in tiny Adams, New Hampshire. Asher has a best friend named Maya, and girlfriend named Lily. These three, plus parents and school mates all find themselves navigating a murder in their midst. That’s when you say, “Ah-HAH!” at the end. I can say no more., If anyone ever wanted to know about beekeeping, this would be the book that would make you want to learn more. The details about beekeeping are plentiful and sometimes they run parallel to the story. Bees are fascinating creatures that keep us all alive., Get this book for the compelling page-turner and read it for the beekeeping lessons! You won’t be sorry on either account!

It took me 50 pages to settle in. Then I could not lay it down. Read it in 24 hours…and I did sleep but more reading was the first thing I did when I woke up at 4:50 this morning. I have been a long time fan of Jennifer Boylan’s work. When my son was interviewing on the Colby College campus I went to lunch by myself. I was invited to sit down at a table with a group of young women. One of these women was one of Jennifer’s advisees. This woman’s face lite up when she spoke about her professor and advisor. I had already read She’s Not There…so it was an added bonus to also learn from her this woman that Professor Boylan was as authentic in person as her writing., My son was not admitted to Colby…but the day was memorable and made special by meeting these young women and hearing their stories of life on the Colby campus. Getting to hear about Professor Boylan and her teaching style was a real perk., This book is very creative. I loved the back and forth of the stories of Lily and Olivia. I wondered at the start how they wrote it together. More than anything I appreciated the narrative of the two lives of Lily and Olivia. There lives more alike than not. The education about the trans community is important as well about the process of grief., Thank-you for a memorable experience. Ava, Lily, Asher and Olivia will be with me for a long time. Good work and congrats to the two of you. Job well done.

The one thing you can count on with a Jodi Picoult book is you never think this is same plot in that other book she wrote. It just doesn’t happen. Every story is different which is largely what keeps me looking forward to her books. Now I cannot say that I have loved every one of them, but mostly I do. She tackles difficult subjects which not only educates you but also makes you think about the topic. This book probably made me think more than any other. I will not go into any details because I don’t want to say something that might keep you from reading it with fresh eyes and hopefully an open mind., This story grabbed me and kept me turning the page. Be prepared, for the story is not told in a traditional manner but I think it had more impact by not doing so. The story touched me more that most. Picoult and Boylan made an excellent team creating a seamless story where I could not tell when the author’s voice changed from one to the other. Definitely one of Picoult’s best.

This book is like being on a swing. It goes up and down. I enjoyed reading Lily’s story and I liked Asher from the beginning and their live story. I didn’t realize this was a transgender story in the beginning and had to go back and take a second look. I always felt like Asher wasn’t the killer and was guessing who could have killed Lily. I didn’t guess correctly but I was saddened by the fact that we don’t learn much once the person responsible is named. That was a let down. I wanted them to pay. I liked learning about the bees but it was so much information and I wanted more of the rest of the story. I wanted to know if Lily’s dad ever contacted Ava. I wanted more money f Jordan and his wife because I loved them just from the descriptions from Olivia’s story. I learned so much in this book about transgender. I learned terms that I don’t typically hear and I felt compassion for Lily and Ava. I wanted Lily to live and experience an amazing love with Asher. Finally, I think Mike was amazing and I’m happy for Olivia. It would be nice to read a sequel and find out what’s happened to these characters 5-10 years from now. I think Asher will become an attorney fighting for the rights of transgender individuals. One of the surprises was reading the authors’ notes at the end and finding out how this story was created and how they felt about the characters. It begins slowly and then you can’t put this book down
